Typically a posh affair put on by the town's socialites, a fifties' garden party was often thrown to showcase the host's elaborate estate. Invitations to the party were extended.
Bar and buffet tables dressed in white cloths and decorated with bowls of pink peonies or fragrant garden roses were set up on the well-manicured lawns. Pitchers of pink lemonade with platters of canapes, cakes, fruits, and sandwiches was favored garden party fare. Frosty cocktails were berry and fruit flavored.
An afternoon garden party was the perfect occasion to dress in pretty floral cotton or linen print fabrics paired with matching wide brimmed hats and low heels or strappy sandals. The dress' waist was cinched with either a sash or a thin belt with the requisite crinoline petticoat peeking beneath the full skirt.
