1955 Academy Awards

The 1955 Academy Awards were held at the RKO Pantages Theatre in Los Angeles, California on March 21, 1956. Jerry Lewis hosted the Hollywood ceremonies with Claudette Colbert and Joseph Mankiewicz co-hosting the television broadcast in New York City to award the top film making efforts for the year 1955.

The low budget film "Marty" received 4 Oscars at the 28th Academy Awards.

Marty was the 1955 Academy Awards winner in the Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Director, and Best Screenplay categories. Although the Delbert Mann directed film based on a teleplay of the same name written by Paddy Chayefsky completed with a budget of only $343,000, it garnered box office revenues of $3,000,000.

Ernest Borgnine won Best Actor for his portrayal of a 34 year old unmarried butcher who meets resistance from his mother and friends when he finally meets a woman he feels he could marry. The film went on to bring international success to both Ernest Borgnine and Betsy Blair and won the Palme d"Or at the Cannes Film Festival.

Ernest Borgnine was born January 24, 1917 and has enjoyed sixty years of acting success. During the 1950s, he was best known as a character actor. His portrayal of the affable butcher in the 1955 film "Marty" won him an Academy Award for best actor.

Magnani was born March 7, 1908 in Rome Italy and died September 26, 1973 at the age of 65.
An Italian stage and film actress, Life magazine reported in 1950 that she was the most impressive actress since Greta Garbo. Playwright Tennessee Williams wrote "The Rose Tattoo" with her in mind.
